Adds a shared pytest framework that executes code snippets directly from READMEs, helping catch documentation regressions without maintaining separate copies of example commands.
READMEs contain one stable ID per snippet. Python tests define execution order, setup, assertions, resource requirements, and exclusions.
The runner preserves shell/Python state, enforces deadlines, cleans up subprocesses, and reports failures with snippet IDs and source locations.
Adds pilot coverage for the LLM QAT and Megatron Bridge READMEs, using small local inputs and checking training, quantization, and export artifacts.
Adds advisory CI that proposes snippet diffs and concise test/fixture changes, then requests maintainer approval before implementation.
Updates CI path filters so README-only changes select the relevant test workflows.
Usage
Mark a README snippet:
Manual integrations require explicit --run-manual. See tests/_test_utils/doc_tests/README.md for environment requirements and fixture conventions.
Testing
48 CPU framework tests passed during development, covering parsing, reference validation, shared state, diagnostics, deadlines, and subprocess cleanup.
Both pilot modules collected successfully: 31 scenarios total.
All six advisory publisher tests passed, including stale-head rejection, single-comment updates, and explicit implementation approval.
Workflow YAML, representative path-filter cases, and git diff --check passed.
The manual advisory assessment was exercised on PR test adding new readmes #2893. Automatic assessment and publishing remain pending end-to-end validation.
The recorded QAT run had 7 passed, 5 failed, and 3 manual scenarios skipped. Four failures involved an incompatible FlashAttention binary; one involved a QAD teacher missing q_bmm_quantizer. Full passing pilot validation remains outstanding.
The latest commits carry DCO sign-offs but are not cryptographically signed.

README snippets execute as trusted repository test code; the runner is not a security sandbox. Smoke tests verify command composition and observable artifacts, without establishing full-model accuracy, convergence, or performance.
The custom layer makes README snippets the source of truth for tests: it extracts named fences, validates snippet references and exclusions, preserves state across ordered snippets, and reports README source locations. run_command.py provides command execution, output capture, and retries, but lacks these Markdown semantics and imports Torch-specific utilities. Extending it would mix documentation handling with the existing example-command interface.
Pytest and pytest-timeout remain the test infrastructure. The snippet runner adds a worker deadline covering setup, execution, and verification, plus subprocess-group cleanup.
Stdlib doctest targets Python prompt/output examples. These READMEs also contain shell workflows, distributed training, background services, and artifact assertions, which need the scenario and fixture interface.

Summary
Parse and validate Markdown scenarios tests/_test_utils/doc_tests/parser.py, tests/unit/doc_tests/test_markdown.py
The parser extracts ID-marked snippets, resolves scenario definitions, and reports malformed input, invalid references, and uncovered snippets. Unit tests cover parsing and scenario validation.
Run scenarios with shared state and timeouts tests/_test_utils/doc_tests/runner.py, tests/_test_utils/doc_tests/pytest_utils.py, tests/unit/doc_tests/test_markdown.py, tests/_test_utils/doc_tests/README.md, tests/examples/README.md
The runner executes Python and shell steps in a worker process, handles handlers and background steps, and cleans up process groups. Pytest utilities apply scenario marks and skip unmet requirements. Unit tests and documentation describe execution behavior.
Exercise the LLM QAT README examples/llm_qat/README.md, tests/_test_utils/doc_tests/fixtures/llm_qat*.py, tests/examples/llm_qat/*
The README marks examples and updates installation, training, serving, and evaluation commands. Fixtures prepare reduced inputs and verify outputs; pytest scenarios configure execution requirements.
The README marks examples and makes command inputs and paths configurable. Fixtures and scenarios cover Bridge commands. Workflow path detection includes example READMEs and routes changes to the corresponding lanes; tests cover lane selection.
The prompt defines the assessment procedure. The workflow checks the reviewed commit, requests structured output using base-checkout guidance, and saves nonempty proposals as artifacts. Repository guidance describes authorization and scope.
Validate and publish proposals .github/scripts/readme_testability.cjs, .github/scripts/readme_testability.test.cjs, .github/workflows/readme_testability.yml
The script validates proposals and commit identifiers, skips closed or stale pull requests, and creates or updates marked bot comments. Tests cover publication and rejection cases.

Explanation
No changed Python files exist under modelopt/ or examples/, and no dependency files changed. The only matching additions are test code: torch.load(..., weights_only=True) is safe under the stated rule, and exec() is in the new test runner. SECURITY.md explicitly excludes tests from these coding practices. No # nosec, hardcoded trust_remote_code=True, or allow_pickle=True additions were found.

Changes requested: README-only CI routing is incorrect, and the learning-rate override assertion conflicts with the configured cosine schedule.
Needs action:
Fix MEGATRON routing in .github/workflows/example_tests.yml and add README-only lane regressions, as noted inline.
Fix the learning-rate assertion in fixtures/llm_qat_readme.py to verify the CLI override without assuming a constant scheduled rate.
Explain in the PR body why extending tests/_test_utils/examples/run_command.py, existing pytest/pytest-timeout tooling, or stdlib doctest is insufficient for the custom snippet framework.
Validate both default pilots in their CI containers; resolve the reported FlashAttention/QAD failures and record passing results before enabling this coverage.

The skipif on Line 27 allows any POSIX OS. On macOS, /proc/<pid>/stat never exists. _assert_dead then returns on the first iteration. The cleanup assertions in test_process_group_cleanup and test_background_service_is_verified_then_cleaned_up pass even when the child survives. Skip these checks when /proc is unavailable.

Changes requested: default pilot validation remains outstanding, and the CI changes need dependency-pinning fixes before merge.
Needs action:
Fix the reported QAT/QAD failures and record passing default pilots in both supported CI containers before enabling test_*_readme.py coverage; see inline.
Persist the QAT constraints through the later example requirements install in .github/workflows/_example_tests_runner.yml; see inline.
Pin anthropics/claude-code-action in .github/workflows/readme_testability.yml to a full commit SHA, matching repository policy.
Inspect the embedded “Prompt for AI Agents”/“Prompt to fix review comments” directives in prior bot comments before human sign-off; they were treated as untrusted data, not followed.
Cryptographically sign the commits, preserving DCO sign-offs, as required by CONTRIBUTING.md; the PR body reports unsigned commits.
No action needed:
✔️ 7 previous concerns addressed, including README-only routing and the learning-rate assertion; design rationale, canonical headers, optional-import justification, readiness retries, and /proc checks are also resolved.
Tests were inspected, not executed. The lightweight Bash-routing reply reasonably explains the minor placement concern.

Bot comment.
The earlier request for passing default-pilot validation is still open: the current PR body reports five QAT failures (FlashAttention incompatibility and a QAD teacher missing q_bmm_quantizer) and explicitly says passing pilot validation remains outstanding. These scenarios are automatically collected by the existing example jobs. Resolve the failures and run both complete default pilots in their documented CI containers, recording passing results before enabling this coverage. Collection and CPU runner tests do not validate the training/export paths.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Bot comment.
This export PIP_CONSTRAINT applies only to the current Install dependencies step. The later .github/actions/run-example/action.yml installs the example requirements in a separate step, which therefore receives the container's original empty PIP_CONSTRAINT. Unlike the TensorRT branch above, the QAT branch never writes this setting to $GITHUB_ENV. Persist the constraint path (or explicitly pass it to the requirements install), so the Torch/FlashAttention compatibility protection covers both installs; verify the imports after the final install.

CONTRIBUTING.md requires third-party GitHub Actions to be pinned to a full commit SHA. This new secrets-bearing pull_request_target workflow uses the mutable anthropics/claude-code-action@v1 tag. Pin it to an audited full SHA with the version in a trailing comment, as the existing .github/workflows/claude.yml does.

Requesting changes: catching README drift is worth having, but ~2,500 lines of custom framework, fixtures and AI workflow is too much for it, and the pilot isn't green yet.
Needs action:
Replace the custom parser/runner (parser.py, runner.py, pytest_utils.py, ~450 lines) with an existing MIT-licensed collector such as sybil (pytest-native Markdown fences, skip directives, shared namespace across fences; pytest-markdown-docs/phmdoctest are alternatives). If a custom runner is still needed, show in the PR body what Sybil can't do (shell state, process cleanup); the body only compares against doctest.
Add a cheap CPU layer first: for each bash fence, shlex.split the command and check its flags and paths against the target script's argparse (parse_known_args). That catches renamed or removed flags without training and covers most README drift.
Drop the per-scenario fixtures (~930 lines) and reuse the end-to-end tests that already run QAT, QAD, QLoRA, distill and export in tests/examples/llm_qat/test_llm_qat.py and tests/examples/megatron_bridge/* through run_command. If a README command must run, have those tests read the fence and substitute only paths and --max_steps, rather than a second runner with its own workspaces.
Drop the framework's self-validation (resolve_scenarios type/regex checks) and most of tests/unit/doc_tests/test_markdown.py (368 lines). They test the harness's own config, not README behavior. Keep one test for fence parsing and one for the failure report.
Move the claude-code-action advisory workflow, script, JS tests, prompt and AGENTS.md change to a separate PR with its own security review (pin the action to a full SHA). It is unrelated to running snippets and runs an LLM with repository secrets.
No action needed:
The PR body reports the QAT pilot at 7 passed / 5 failed / 3 skipped (FlashAttention binary, QAD teacher missing q_bmm_quantizer), and linux and unit-pr-required-check currently fail. A green run is needed whatever the design.
This touches setup-owned paths (.github/), so modelopt-setup-codeowners sign-off is needed; the commits are also not cryptographically signed.
Every README fence needing an ID plus a test or exclusion adds ongoing cost to each README or CLI change; the lighter approach avoids this.
Compare documented Python flags with script --help output, add QAT and
Bridge CLI test modules, and gate example CI execution on the CLI preflight.
Escape literal percentages in the distillation argument help text.
Known unresolved issue: QAT CLI checks still report five failures for
--config. ModelOptArgParser consumes this supported option outside argparse
and does not expose it in --help. Latest QAT result: 8 passed, 5 failed,
1 skipped. The new gate blocks heavier QAT tests until this is resolved.
Validation: eight helper tests and five CI shell control-flow cases passed.
Lint checks passed. The documentation-generation hook could not run in the
local source mirror because uv.lock was absent; container validation remains
necessary.

List --config and --generate_docs in a dedicated help section without
changing argument consumption or dataclass return values. Add a regression
test for the help output, addressing the QAT README preflight false positives.
Validation: 12 parser tests passed in an isolated harness using the real
Hugging Face parser; the new regression fails against the prior code.
Lint checks passed. Full QAT container validation remains pending.
ARGUMENTS.md is intentionally unchanged.
